But in the sea of demographic, health and economic data collected by governments, academic institutions and research organizations, they are regularly excluded from study or put in the catch-all miscellaneous category of “other.” This is not just a U.S. problem; it’s a global one. In September 2014, Indigenous nations from around the world voiced their concern about their omission from the large aggregate datasets compiled by their respective governments.
