Rep. Deb Haaland (D-New Mexico) delivers remarks at the #RemoveTheStain press conference in Washington, D.C., on June 25, 2019.
Haaland, a citizen of the Pueblo of Laguna and one of the first two Native women in Congress, is an original co-sponsor of H.R.3467, the Remove the Stain Act. The bill, which has bipartisan support, rescinds the Medals of Honor awarded to the men who participated in the massacre of 300 Lakota people at Wounded Knee in South Dakota on December 29, 1890.
“The introduction of this bill today shows the continued work and strength of the Native American people who have fought for more than a century for the United States to acknowledge the genocide of our people that has taken place on this soil,” said Haaland.
