“Our Forest Is Our Life": Indigenous Peoples from Ecuadorian Amazon Defend Historic Victories For Indigenous Rights & Amazon Protection - Amazon Frontlines

Dear Shawnee, and All Warriorz,

The Amazon stands at a critical tipping point – and with it, the fate of our planet. On the frontlines of the movement to save our world’s largest rainforest, indigenous peoples across the region are ramping up efforts to resist the unrelenting advance of oil rigs and chainsaws, mining companies and cattle ranchers.

In the Western Amazon, the Waorani and Kofán peoples, who won landmark lawsuits against big oil and mining, are setting an example in the fight to save the Amazon. Last week, hundreds of community members traveled several days by foot, canoe, and road to Ecuador’s capital city of Quito to protect their historic legal victories from government corruption and inaction - and forge a roadmap for advancing indigenous rights and large scale rainforest protection across the Amazon.

In the coming months, the Amazon Frontlines team will be working with our indigenous partners to secure legal precedent around indigenous people’s internationally recognized right to decide what happens in their territories - and we are going to be arguing at the highest court in the land - the Ecuadorian Supreme Court. We’re going to need your help supercharging our legal efforts, bolstering our advocacy, and ensuring that the Waorani and Kofán people have the resources they need to mobilize.

Will you stand together with all of us at this critical moment?
The devastating fires that ravaged the Amazon last year sparked global outcry and an outpouring of solidarity for indigenous peoples whose physical and cultural survival depends on healthy rivers, bountiful wildlife, and the biodiversity of the largest rainforest on earth.

It’s up to all of you - and to all of us - to make sure that the outcry continues, that our solidarity grows, that we double-down in our commitment to stand with the Amazon’s oldest guardians. The future of the forest, and our planet depends on it.

For indigenous rights and the Amazon rainforest,

The Amazon Frontlines Team
