Bryan Brewer, former president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, shares his thoughts about why he called veterans and other volunteers from his tribe together on Sunday, May 10, 2020, to man checkpoints on highways leading onto the Pine Ridge Reservation of South Dakota. Two days earlier, SD Gov. Kristi Noem ordered the Oglala and Cheyenne River Sioux tribes to shut down their checkpoints, but tribal leaders have refused to do so.
